A Tribute to the Keeper of the Kaaba and the Rise of Online Gambling in Saudi Arabia

Sheikh Salah al-Shaibi, the Guardian of the Keys to the Kaaba, Passes Away

In Saudi Arabia, the keeper of the keys to the Kaaba, Dr. Salah bin Zain al-Abidin al-Shaibi, passed away after a long illness. This main shrine of the Muslim world is located in the Sacred Mosque of Mecca and has been held by members of the al-Shaibi family for centuries. Salah was the 77th person to hold this position since Muhammad’s conquest of Mecca in the 7th century AD.

Salah’s duties included opening and closing the shrine, overseeing cleaning and ablutions, and maintaining the kiswa – a traditional cover made of black and gold embroidery. He was also a professor of Islamic theology and an author of many books and articles.

Following Salah’s passing, King Salman and Prince Muhammad expressed their condolences to his relatives. The candidates for the position are said to be Salah’s son and nephew, who have served as his deputies at different times.
