Against All Odds: How Jamie Decker Fought for Accessibility and Succeeded

In the city of Butte, a determined businesswoman battled for years to obtain permission to build an access ramp in front of her business. Jamie Decker, owner of Top Deck Medical Aesthetics and Wellness, remained steadfast through the challenges and eventually succeeded in her quest. Despite initial denials due to right-of-way encroachment and liability concerns regarding the city-owned sidewalk, Decker never wavered.

For over a year, Decker worked tirelessly to secure an ADA access ramp for her business on Granite Street. Her perseverance paid off when the Council of Commissioners granted her the permit during their April 17 meeting. The decision came after passionate testimonies from more than 20 citizens, many of whom had disabilities and supported Decker’s cause.

Wearing T-shirts that read “The Future is Accessible,” Decker’s supporters urged the council to approve the construction of the ramp. They emphasized the importance of accessibility for the local community and how it could bring economic benefits to the city.

Individuals with disabilities shared their frustrations about the lack of accessibility, pointing out how difficult it is for them to access necessary services. Despite feeling overlooked, they spoke up during the meeting to highlight how inclusive infrastructure is essential in creating a more accessible community.

Commissioner Bill Anderson expressed empathy towards those who feel invisible due to their disabilities, reassuring them that their voices were heard. The approval of the access ramp marked a significant victory for Decker and her supporters, highlighting how perseverance and collective advocacy can promote accessibility and inclusivity within the community.

Decker thanked her supporters for their unwavering support throughout her journey and looked forward to providing accessible services for all members of her community soon.

In conclusion, Jamie Decker’s battle against right-of-way encroachment and liability concerns highlights how important it is to advocate for inclusive infrastructure in our communities. Her persistence paid off with an ADA access ramp grant from Butte’s Council of Commissioners, bringing hope and accessibility to those who need it most.
