Albanian Football Federation Bans Striker Mirlind Daku for Euro 2024 Chants: A Case Study in UEFA’s Struggle Against Racism in Sport

Albanian footballer suspended for making anti-Serbia remarks during Euro 2024

The Albanian Football Federation (FSHF) has banned striker Mirlind Daku for two matches following his actions at Euro 2024. Daku led fan chants with a megaphone, including derogatory remarks about Macedonia and Serbia. He will miss his team’s final group stage match against Spain and a potential last-16 tie.

Daku previously played for Kosovo before switching to Albania last year, but has continued to represent Kosovo in friendly matches and goal celebrations. The FSHF was also penalized for chants from supporters, including one that reportedly said “kill the Serb.” The Football Association of Serbia’s general secretary threatened to quit the European Championship unless UEFA took action against Albania and Croatia for the chants aimed at the Serbian team.

Daku apologized for his actions on social media, but was suspended by UEFA for violating principles of conduct and bringing disrepute to the sport. An Albanian journalist also lost his accreditation for directing a controversial sign towards the Serbia fans during a match involving England. Albania and Croatia were fined for various infractions during the tournament, including fans lighting fireworks and transmitting provocative messages.
