Apple’s AI Unveil in iOS 18: Balancing Innovation and Privacy

Some AI functions in iOS 18 will be offered as optional due to security concerns

Apple is set to unveil new AI functions in iOS 18, with a focus on Generative AI. However, due to concerns about security and privacy related to this technology, these features will be optional and disabled by default. The Cupertino company aims to catch up with its competitors by introducing these new AI functions at its annual developers event (WWDC) on June 10.

One of the anticipated announcements is a collaboration with OpenAI, which will bring the company’s technology to the new iPhones with iOS 18. This partnership will allow users to access an advanced chatbot, powered by OpenAI’s language models. However, there are concerns about the potential data access that OpenAI could have to Apple’s millions of users.

According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, certain AI functions in iOS 18 will be optional and disabled by default to address privacy and security issues. Sources familiar with the matter have confirmed this information, as reported by 9to5Mac.

In addition, Apple has developed its own language model called Ajax, which will power other AI features in iOS 18. These features are not expected to raise the same privacy and security concerns initially. By offering these new AI functions as optional and addressing privacy and security concerns head-on, Apple hopes to maintain user trust while also staying competitive in the tech industry.
