Asteroid 2024 GJ2: The Small Asteroid That’s As Big As A Car and Passed Us by Just Days Ago

The asteroid comes within 30 times the distance between Earth and the Moon

Recently, astronomers have discovered an asteroid named 2024 GJ2 that is as large as a car. This asteroid came closest to Earth on April 12 Hanoi time, at a distance of just 18,700 km. Measuring 2.5 – 5 m in size, it flew past our planet at a distance of 19,300 km on April 11. This distance is only about 3% of the distance between the Earth and the Moon. According to the European Space Agency (ESA), if its orbit directly crossed the planet, it would burn up in Earth’s atmosphere.

The next flyby of asteroid 2024 GJ2 will take place in 2093, with a distance of just 205,947 km from Earth. That’s half the distance from Earth to the Moon! Astronomers estimate there are over a million asteroids in our solar system, including nearly 35,000 near-Earth asteroids. Most of these rocky orbs range in size from just 10 meters to an impressive 529 kilometers in diameter.

Asteroids are found between Mars and Jupiter in what’s known as the asteroid belt. Jay Tate, director of the Spaceguard observatory in the UK, explains that because they’re relatively small and weakly held together by gravity, their orbits can intersect with those of planets like ours. In other words, we need to be careful!
