Astros release struggling first baseman José Abreu amidst decline in performance and struggle in AL West

José Abreu released by Houston Astros

The Houston Astros have announced the release of first baseman José Abreu, despite still having over $30 million left on his three-year free agency contract. This move comes after Abreu’s demotion to the minors in April due to a poor start to the season, where he was batting a mere 0.099. Throughout this season, Abreu has struggled significantly, only managing a .124 average with a .361 OPS and two home runs.

This marks a decline from his performance with the Chicago White Sox, where he had a .304 average in 2022 before joining the Astros. With a current record of 31-38, the Astros find themselves in third place in the struggling AL West division. Despite parting ways with Abreu, the team will continue to push forward in hopes of improving their standing in the league.
