Badger Women’s Hockey Shines at 2024 IIHF World Championships: UW Alumni and Current Players Earn Individual Honors

The Wisconsin women’s hockey program had a remarkable presence at the 2024 IIHF Women’s World Championships, with former Badgers leading Canada to gold and current players earning individual honors. UW sophomore Laila Edwards was named the tournament MVP for the U.S., while alum Kristen Campbell helped Canada secure its 13th World Championships title.

In addition to Edwards, several other current Badgers had impressive performances, with Britta Curl recording three assists and Lacey Eden tallying three points. Kirsten Simms also contributed to the U.S. team’s success by scoring the game-winning goal in a preliminary match.

Meanwhile, on the Canadian side, Ann-Renee Desbiens made history by breaking the record for the most wins at Women’s Worlds, while Sarah Nurse and Blayre Turnbull also had strong performances throughout the tournament. Alum Hilary Knight set a new record for the most medals won by an individual athlete at the IIHF Women’s World Championships, earning her 14th medal and posting 10 points during the tournament.

Overall, it was a standout performance from both teams, with several Badgers making significant contributions to their respective teams’ successes at the championships.
