Bangladesh vs. Afghanistan: The Battle for Australia’s T20 World Cup Semi-Final Spot

Qualifying Scenarios for Australia, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh in the 2024 T20 World Cup Semifinals

The fate of Australia’s semi-final berth in the T20 World Cup 2024 now rests on the outcome of Bangladesh versus Afghanistan. To secure a spot, Australia requires Bangladesh to defeat Afghanistan by at least 62 runs if they bat first or by chasing a total of 141 in no more than 12.4 overs.

As it stands, Bangladesh’s net run rate is -2.489, meaning they would need a significant victory to surpass Australia’s -0.331 and secure second place on the points table. If Bangladesh wins by 62 runs or more, or chases down a target of 141 in 12.3 overs or earlier, they will climb to second place and eliminate Australia from contention for the semi-finals.

On the other hand, Afghanistan only needs to win their final match against Bangladesh to finish as runners-up in Group A and progress to the semi-finals. Even if they lose in a Super Over, their net run rate would still be below Australia’s, making them uncontested for the remaining spots in the knockout stage.

The team that finishes second in this group will face off against South Africa, currently leading Group 2, in the semi-finals. India will play England in the other semifinal match. These high-stakes games will determine which teams will advance to compete for the T20 World Cup title.
