Bette Nash: The Record-Breaking Flight Attendant who Inspired Generations in the Aviation Industry

Bette Nash, World’s Longest-Serving Flight Attendant, Passes Away at 88 After 67 Years of Service with American Airlines

In 2022, Bette Nash earned the Guinness World Record title for the longest-serving flight attendant. This recognition came after she had battled breast cancer and passed away at the age of 88. Nash had served American Airlines for nearly 67 years, starting her career with Eastern Airlines in 1957. She was based in DC and preferred working the American Shuttle flight from Washington, DC, to Boston so she could be home every night to care for her son, who has Down Syndrome.

Throughout her career, the airline underwent several name changes, from Eastern Airlines to US Air Shuttle, among others. Nash’s dedication and passion for serving others inspired many generations of flight attendants. The Association of Professional Flight Attendants mourned her loss, acknowledging her as an integral part of their history.

Brady Byrnes, senior vice president of Inflight & Premium Guest Services for American Airlines praised Nash’s quick wit, magnetic personality and passion for serving others. Nash’s legacy lives on in the memories and hearts of those she inspired and worked alongside in the aviation industry.
