Beyond The Hype: Poppi Lawsuit Unveils the Limitations of Functional Beverages

Consumer questions gut health claims made by Poppi drink in lawsuit

A class-action lawsuit has been filed against popular soda brand Poppi by a consumer who claims that their products do not provide the gut health benefits suggested by their marketing. Kristin Cobbs, the plaintiff, purchased Poppi drinks based on their labels that claim to be prebiotic sodas with the slogan “Be Gut Happy. Be Gut Healthy.” However, she discovered that Poppi drinks only contain around 2 grams of prebiotic agave inulin fiber, which she believes is insufficient to offer any real benefit.

Cobbs argues that any potential prebiotic benefits from drinking more Poppi would be outweighed by the increased sugar consumption from the drinks. She is seeking monetary relief for herself and other similar customers who may have been misled by the marketing of Poppi products. The lawsuit claims that consuming 7.5 grams of agave inulin daily for three weeks did not provide meaningful prebiotic benefits, according to research cited in the lawsuit.

The lawsuit against Poppi raises questions about the effectiveness of prebiotics and probiotics in functional beverages and how they are marketed to consumers. As one of many brands in the rapidly growing category of functional beverages, Poppi has stood behind its products and stated that they intend to vigorously defend against the allegations. Sales of prebiotic and probiotic drinks in the U.S., according to data from consulting firm AlixPartners, have more than tripled in the past year, indicating a growing demand for healthy beverage options. It remains to be seen how this lawsuit will impact the larger landscape of the functional beverage industry as it progresses.
