BlackBerry: From Dominant Cell Phone Maker to Cybersecurity Pioneer

In the early 2000s, BlackBerry was a dominant force in the cell phone market, offering both elegant and robust devices. However, with the advent of smartphones and the proliferation of Android devices, the Canadian company was pushed out of the industry. Nevertheless, it found success in another area: software and cybersecurity.

BlackBerry has been making strides in this new field. The company recorded $144 million in revenue for the first fiscal quarter that ended on May 31, surpassing analyst estimates by $10 million. According to RBC Capital, BlackBerry’s short-term profitability projection is improving. However, despite its positive results, BlackBerry is not yet profitable. It posted a loss of $42 million in the first quarter.

Despite its financial struggles, BlackBerry seems to have found a path forward by targeting industries that require reliable communication and cybersecurity solutions. Its clients include companies and governments around the world who rely on its services such as BBMe, a secure communications offering that runs on various operating systems and Cylance brand which offers prevention, detection and response to cybersecurity incidents.
