Boeing’s New Nagoya Research Center: Advancing Sustainability and Innovation in Aviation

Boeing has recently established a research and technology center in Nagoya, with a focus on advancing the decarbonization of aviation. The center will prioritize areas such as model-based engineering, composites, sustainable aviation fuel, and the potential use of hydrogen fuel cells in aircraft. In addition to these areas of focus, the facility will also explore production methods, with an emphasis on worker safety and ergonomics.

Boeing Japan president Will Shaffer expressed excitement about the collaboration with Japanese partners to support production and sustainment of the company’s commercial and defense aircraft. The new center in Nagoya will also invest in digital engineering and advanced manufacturing capabilities, driving sustainability and innovation.

The opening of this research and technology center in Nagoya was initially announced by Boeing in August 2022. Nagoya is recognized as a significant hub in Japan’s aerospace industry, with Japanese Tier One manufacturers playing a vital role in producing aerostructures for Boeing aircraft like the 777 and 787. This new center marks Boeing’s 12th facility of its kind worldwide, demonstrating the company’s commitment to advancing technology and sustainability in the aviation sector.
