Breaking Barriers: The Denver Broncos Foundation and Girls Flag Football Pilot Program in Colorado

CHSAA Approves Girls Flag Football as Official High School Sport, Supported by Broncos

The Denver Broncos Foundation, in collaboration with the CHSAA and the Broncos, launched the state’s girls flag football pilot program in 2021. The program was funded for its inaugural seasons from 2022-23 and included 50 schools, 10 school districts, and nearly 1,500 girls who played in almost 850 games.

The pilot program experienced a significant increase in participation in 2023, with the number of participants (1,316) and games (680) growing by 161 percent and 310 percent respectively. CHSAA Commissioner Mike Krueger expressed his excitement about the program’s growth, highlighting that it goes beyond just the game to promote empowerment, teamwork, and breaking barriers. The program aims to cultivate leadership, confidence, and equality for female athletes, inspiring a new era of inclusivity and self-empowerment.

The Broncos have been consistent supporters of the pilot program since its launch. They hosted the championship tournament and a round-robin exhibition event at the Centura Health Training Center in the last two seasons. Members of Broncos leadership and players have attended these events to show their backing.

With the official sanctioning of girls flag football by CHSAA, the Denver Broncos Foundation will continue to support this sport through seasonal programming, coaching clinics, athlete and coach recognition events, as well as youth health and wellness initiatives.
