Breaking Down Barriers: US Treasury Secretary Yellen and Chinese Premier Li Emphasize the Need for Cooperation in Addressing Global Challenges

Janet Yellen encourages China and US to engage in ‘frank and productive’ discussions, rather than avoiding ‘tough conversations’ during meeting with Li Qiang

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen emphasized the importance of cooperation and mutual respect between the United States and China during her meeting with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. She highlighted the crucial role that their partnership plays in addressing global challenges and stressed the need for direct and open communication between the two countries.

Yellen’s discussions with Chinese Vice-Premier He Lifeng in Guangzhou focused on overcapacity issues, with both parties agreeing to hold intensive exchanges to address economic and financial challenges. Beijing expressed concerns about excessive Chinese exports potentially harming American interests and causing global economic repercussions, while Yellen highlighted her own worries about US trade restrictions against China.

Despite their differences, both Yellen and Li echoed a commitment to finding common ground in the complex relationship between the US and China. Their talks reflect a determination to address differences and work together to find solutions that benefit both countries, as well as the global community as a whole.
