On Tuesday night, the United States Senate passed a law that will block TikTok from operating in the country. The following day, President Joe Biden signed the bill into law for immediate implementation. The law gives ByteDance 270 days to find an investor from a non-foreign adversary country to sell the company. If ByteDance is unable to do so, TikTok will be blocked in the United States both in stores and services.
TikTok has stated that they plan to challenge the law in court, calling it unconstitutional and claiming that they believe they have evidence on their side. They warned that a potential ban could have devastating consequences for 7 million American businesses and 170 million users of the app.
The arguments for banning TikTok in the US stem from concerns about China’s ability to access user data through ByteDance and manipulate content on the app to influence public opinion. The bill was part of a larger package of measures that included military aid for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, among others, and received support with 79 votes in favor and 18 against.
