CalPortland Takes a Leap Toward Sustainability with Technology Licensing Deal for Low-Carbon Cement

Solidia Technologies acquires license for eco-friendly cement technology

CalPortlandĀ® Company, one of the largest building materials producers in the Western United States, has recently entered into a technology licensing arrangement with Solidia Technologies, Inc., a pioneer and leading company in the low carbon cement and concrete market. This licensing agreement will enable CalPortland to use certain patents that allow for up to a 50% reduction in the carbon footprint of cement and concrete. The limited licenses will specifically allow CalPortland to use Solidia’s technology in the Western US as they develop low carbon solutions. In addition to licensing rights, CalPortland has also purchased certain lab and plant assets from Solidia.

“We are excited about this new licensing program with CalPortland,” said Russell Hill, CEO of Solidia. “CalPortland’s commitment to decarbonisation of the cement and concrete industries aligns perfectly with our mission to provide innovative solutions that reduce CO2 emissions.” Bill Mullen, Chief Operating Officer at CalPortland, shared his company’s focus on decarbonisation opportunities and their dedication to finding new strategies for reducing carbon emissions in their operations.

Solidia Cement is a unique low-limestone cement that achieves strength through carbonation rather than hydration like traditional portland cement. It is made using the same raw materials and equipment as portland cement but achieves significant CO2 reductions due to lower production temperatures and reduced limestone calcination. This cement can be utilized in the manufacture of concrete products and supplemental cementitious materials.

Following this divestiture, Solidia plans to continue working with licensing partners around the world to provide its low carbon solutions. They have over 300 patents and patent applications globally.
