Charlie Ward Champions Ranch: A Step Closer to Reality in Southeast Tallahassee

Potential New Sports Complex in the Works for Southeast Tallahassee

The Charlie Ward Champions Ranch, a new sports complex in Southeast Tallahassee, is one step closer to becoming a reality. The project, which is named after former FSU quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward, will be located near the intersection of Capital Circle Southeast and Woodville Highway.

Recently, the Tallahassee-Leon County Planning Commission voted to recommend rezoning the area to make way for the project. While some residents have expressed concerns about the impact of the complex on the community, others are excited about the prospect of having a new place where their kids can play sports and enjoy outdoor activities.

Miesha Barrington, a parent of five who frequents Four Oaks Park, said she believes having a new sports complex in the neighborhood will be a welcome addition to the community. She expressed her excitement about the prospect of her kids being able to play different sports and enjoy various outdoor activities at one location.

The proposed sports complex covers 109.36 acres and includes multi-sport fields, courts, a golf course, a driving range, walking trails, and park areas. Additionally, about 1/3 of the property will be designated for retail and event space. Pickleball player Spencer Duffey also shared his enthusiasm for the project, mentioning that having more options for recreational activities will help keep him fit and active in his free time.

While initial approval from the planning commission has been secured, there are still additional steps that need to be taken before construction can begin. The next hurdle is for the city commission to vote on rezoning
