In a surprising turn of events, China’s Wang Xinyu achieved her first victory against a top-five player at Wimbledon. She defeated No. 5 Jessica Pegula in the second round in London, with Pegula suffering a shocking loss. Xinyu, ranked No. 42, secured her first win over a top-10 player and became the first Chinese player to defeat a top-five player since 2008.
Following the match, Wang expressed her happiness at the win, noting that Pegula presented a challenging opponent on grass courts. Pegula, who reached the quarterfinals last year, was expected to make a strong showing in this year’s tournament. Meanwhile, Yafan Wang advanced to the third round and will face Harriet Dart next.
On the men’s side of things, American Ben Shelton won an incredibly difficult five-set match against Lloyd Harris. He showcased determination and skill in his impressive victory. Madison Keys also had a successful match, defeating Wang Yafan in straight sets. Keys will now face Marta Kostyuk in the next round while Shelton is set to compete against Denis Shapovalov in upcoming matches.
Overall, it has been an exciting start to Wimbledon so far with many upsets and surprises already taking place on both sides of the draw.
