Chinese Missile Used in Hamas Attack on IDF Prompts Concerns over Weapon Supply to Terrorist Groups

Recently, Hamas unveiled the use of a Chinese-made HJ-8L guided anti-tank missile in an attack against the IDF in Rafah. The missile caused a fire, which was later extinguished by a Caterpillar 966G. The HJ-8L missile is part of the Chinese HJ-8 family and has been in production since 1985. The L model, or “Light” model, was developed following lessons from conflicts in Bosnia, requiring a lighter model.

The HJ-8L launcher can carry two missiles with different ranges. Other models of the HJ-8 missile are used by various armies around the world, including Egypt, Syria, United Arab Emirates, and Pakistan. The missiles are wire-guided, allowing operators to make course corrections during flight. The L model is lighter due to advanced microelectronics systems in its fire control system, reducing its weight to 22.5 kg.
