Controversial: French Assembly Debates Recognition of Palestinian State, Suspends Session and Excludes Rep. Delogo

Hoisting the Palestinian flag at the French National Assembly

A heated debate took place in the French National Assembly after Sebastian Delogo, a representative of the leftist “Proud France” party, raised a Palestinian flag during a question about the situation in Gaza. This led to the suspension of the session and Delogo’s exclusion from the Assembly for 15 days.

Delogo stated that his action was a personal initiative in response to questions from the press and emphasized that it was not an official position of his party. The incident coincided with Spain, Ireland, and Norway officially recognizing the State of Palestine. During the session, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal was asked about France’s position on the issue but did not provide a direct answer. The Green Party leader, Cyril Chatelain, pressed for a simple “yes or no” answer on whether the French government will recognize the Palestinian state.

The “Proud France” party had previously emphasized the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza during their campaign for the European elections. The incident sparked debate and questions about France’s stance on the issue, highlighting the complexities of the situation in the region.
