Crisis averted: Police successfully resolve four-hour standoff on I-40 in Burlington, North Carolina

On Saturday morning, a mental health crisis situation involving a woman and children caused both directions of I-40 in Burlington, North Carolina to be closed for approximately four hours. The crisis began when the Burlington Communications Center received a 911 hang-up call around 4 a.m. from the area around Exit 140. Upon arrival, police discovered a 25-year-old woman with children in her vehicle who had made comments suggesting she may be armed.

The situation was quickly resolved by members of the Burlington Regional Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT), including Crisis Negotiators. After about three hours, the woman was detained without incident or injury, and the children were safely removed from the vehicle. The woman is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.

Following the resolution of the crisis, both directions of I-40 were reopened and there is no longer any threat to the public. The Burlington Police Department praised the officers and crisis intervention specialists for their dedication and skill in safely resolving the situation using their training in de-escalation and mental health interventions.
