Custom Shoe Design: Teaching Problem-Solving and Self-Reliance at William Smith High School

Colorado high school students receive exclusive opportunity from New York Fashion Institute of Technology

At William Smith High School in Aurora, students are given the chance to create their own custom pair of Nike Dunks under the guidance of teacher Chris Hunt. Each student gets to make a pair of shoes that they can give to themselves or as a gift for someone else. Destini Bradley, a sophomore student, is making her friend’s favorite color into her shoe design.

Hunt wanted his class to teach students not only how to make shoes but also how to problem-solve and be more self-reliant. He believes that by giving them the ability to fix their mistakes and not rely on others as much, they will have more skills and knowledge beyond just designing shoes. The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York took notice of the class and invited Hunt and his students to visit for a tour.

Hunt hopes that this opportunity will help inspire his students to pursue careers in fashion beyond this class. He wants them to see that there are many jobs and careers available in the fashion industry, and he believes that this class can be just the beginning of their journey towards success in this field.
