The Military Academy of the Signal Corps in St. Petersburg, Russia’s Leningrad Military District reported that seven soldiers were injured after a 76-millimeter World War II-era munition exploded during a cleaning process. The incident occurred when soldiers were unloading garbage into a container, as per the district’s press office.
According to the press office, the munition “arbitrarily detonated” during the cleaning process, causing injuries to the soldiers present. The wounded individuals were quickly transported to the Defense Ministry’s health facility for medical attention.
Governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Beglov clarified that the explosion was not related to any terrorist activities. The incident underscores the ongoing risks associated with handling and disposing of old munitions, even from past conflicts like World War II.
