After being fired as the Chargers head coach last season, Brandon Staley had been in the running for several defensive coordinator positions but did not land any of them. However, he was ultimately offered a different role on Kyle Shanahan’s staff with the 49ers. This week, Staley was confirmed as the assistant head coach/defense for the team and spoke to reporters for the first time in his new position on Wednesday.
Staley’s new role marks a significant change from his previous experience as a coordinator with the Chargers, but he views it as a positive opportunity. Nick Sorenson is currently serving as the coordinator, and Shanahan stated that Staley has been brought on to assist in various capacities, including serving as a sounding board for Sorenson.
Staley expressed his alignment with Shanahan and General Manager John Lynch in terms of leadership style, noting that this was a key factor in his decision to join the 49ers. He sees this new role as a reset of sorts, which he believes is necessary given his unsuccessful stint with the Chargers. While he only spent one year as a coordinator before being fired, Staley understands that taking a step back is necessary to work towards another shot at a head coaching role. Joining a team with a strong reputation like the 49ers offers him promising start on this journey of improvement and development.
