Del Ray vs. Old Town Softball Battle: A Battle for Supremacy and a Night of Fun in Alexandria

Battle between businesses in Old Town and Del Ray set for Thursday in softball game

The highly anticipated 6th Annual Del Ray vs. Old Town Softball Battle will take place on Thursday, May 23 at Simpson Field. This annual event promises to be an exciting showdown between the two neighborhoods, with Del Ray businesses looking to defend their title against Old Town.

The game will kick off at 6 p.m., with Mayor Justin Wilson throwing the first pitch at Eugene Simpson Park. The match will consist of five innings and feature delicious food trucks, mouth-watering ice cream, and draft beer from Port City Brewing Company.

Del Ray team captain Bill Blackburn is determined to retain the John Porter Cup for the third consecutive year. He believes his players are well-prepared and ready for the challenge that awaits them on the field. Meanwhile, Old Town team captain Trae Lamond is confident in his team’s ability to win, despite the weather forecast predicting a 50% chance of rain. He jokingly stated that they plan to outscore Del Ray and make them shake in their yoga pants.

Longtime umpire Dana Lawhorne, Alexandria’s retired sheriff, will not be officiating this year’s game but will instead provide commentary from the broadcast booth. In past years, Lawhorne ejected Blackburn from the game for challenging one of his calls. Despite any playful banter between the teams, both sides are excited to compete and showcase their skills on the field.

This annual event has become a beloved tradition in Alexandria, bringing together two neighborhoods for a friendly rivalry while supporting local businesses and enjoying great food and drinks.
