Detroit among the Worst Cities for Air Quality: How to Stay Safe During Unhealthy Conditions in Southeast Michigan

Air quality in Detroit ranked as one of the worst in the world, with conditions falling into the unhealthy range.

Poor air quality affects everyone, but it is especially dangerous for sensitive groups like children, the elderly, pregnant people, and individuals with cardiac or pulmonary conditions. This was recently reported by IQAir, which ranked Detroit as No. 4 for worst air quality among major cities, following Fourth of July celebrations filled with fireworks.

Detroit wasn’t the only city in Southeast Michigan experiencing unhealthy air quality. Grosse Pointe Park, Clinton Township, St. Clair Shores, Oak Park, Berkley, Madison Heights, Dearborn, and Dearborn Heights were also affected. The National Weather Service predicts isolated severe storms on Friday afternoon in Southeast Michigan with the potential for strong winds up to 60 miles per hour and hail of one-inch diameter. Although the risk of storms is marginal, the expected timing is between 4 and 10 p.m.
