The Viking Octantis, a 665-foot long cruise ship, anchored in Lake Michigan off Algoma on May 29, 2024. This stop along the Lake Michigan shoreline was one of many destinations on the trip that started in Toronto, Ontario and will end in Duluth, Minnesota. Carrying about 350 passengers on this journey, the ship offers an opportunity for people from all over the world to explore the Great Lakes, which experts consider to be the largest freshwater system on the planet.

Passengers like Roe Garrett from San Antonio, Texas are excited to experience this adventure for the first time. They are drawn by the opportunity to see historical references like “Edmund Fitzgerald” and experience the beauty of the area. Despite the short stay in Algoma, passengers are eager to learn more about its offerings and participate in excursions like hikes, visits to Door County and wine and beer tasting.

Rosemary Paladini, Executive Director of Algoma Area Chamber of Commerce highlights how important it is for businesses in Algoma when a large cruise ship visits their city. Last season’s visit generated approximately $275,000 for local businesses. She emphasizes that passengers participate in various activities like exploring local shops and restaurants while they’re here.

The Viking Octantis is scheduled to spend the night at Mackinac Island in Michigan as part of its ongoing Great Lakes Cruise. This trip provides a unique opportunity for passengers to discover different destinations and appreciate the natural beauty of Great Lakes region.
