On a recent holiday to the German Wadden island of Borkum, a tourist made a startling discovery when they stumbled upon suspicious packages on the beach. Upon closer inspection, the bags were found to contain 1,000 kilos of cocaine. The tourist immediately alerted the authorities and the island’s location north of the Dutch Groningen but is part of Germany. The police have confirmed the drug discovery to local media but have not provided any further details as the investigation is ongoing.
This incident marks yet another example of drugs washing up on the shores of the German North Sea coast. In 2021, workers discovered 25 kilos of cocaine on a dike in Aurich and a similar amount washed up on the Wadden island of Baltrum. The presence of drugs on these shores highlights an ongoing issue with drug trafficking in the region.
