Dubai’s $8 Billion Flood Protection Plan: Preparing for Future Climate Challenges and Expanding Stormwater Drainage Capacity

Dubai has recently announced an ambitious plan to invest 8 billion USD in building a comprehensive stormwater drainage system to prevent future flood disasters. The announcement comes in response to unprecedented heavy rain that caused serious flooding in the city just two months ago. The new system is expected to cover the entire area of Dubai and absorb over 20 million cubic meters of water per day, with construction set to begin immediately and completion scheduled for 2033.

The need for the project became apparent after a record-breaking downpour in April, which turned streets into rivers and caused homes to flood.
