After facing Islam Makhachev at UFC 302, Dustin Poirier contemplating retirement

Dustin Poirier has hinted at the possibility of retiring after his upcoming title fight with Islam Makhachev at UFC 302. Poirier, a 35-year-old American, is set to challenge Makhachev on 1 June for the undisputed lightweight belt, hoping it will be third time lucky for him after his previous attempts.

In a recent interview with CBS, Poirier expressed his uncertainty about continuing in the sport if he loses the UFC 302 main event. He mentioned feeling ready to shift his focus towards being a father, husband, and establishing a routine at home. While he acknowledged the possibility of making a comeback, Poirier emphasized that this fight could mark the end of his career. He is looking to find contentment with his journey, win or lose, and hopes to seal his legacy by becoming the undisputed lightweight champion after his 31st fight in the UFC.

Poirier’s last fight was in March, where he secured a knockout victory over Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 299. This win allowed him to bounce back from a previous knockout loss to Justin Gaethje in July. Despite not defeating any of the current champions while they held their titles, Poirier boasts victories over several former undisputed UFC champions, such as Conor McGregor, Max Holloway, Michael Chandler, Eddie Alvarez, and Anthony Pettis.
