A 42-year-old man’s life was put at risk after consuming a caterpillar in Yen Bai. The insect caused severe symptoms, including vomiting, stomach pain, numbness in his tongue and face, and blood in his urine. Doctors at Central Military Hospital 108 provided intensive medical care to the patient, including resuscitation, fluid infusion, detoxification, and monitoring of his organ function. Fortunately, the patient’s condition has since stabilized with improvement in muscle weakness in his limbs and return to normal kidney function.
Dr. Pham Dang Hai from the Department of Internal Medicine and Poison Control explained that there is a common misconception among many people that consuming ban mou worms can enhance health. However, these insects contain a toxic substance called cantharidin that can lead to poisoning. Ban meo worms are black beetles with a small body and unique features found in various regions of Vietnam. These caterpillars pose a threat due to their toxic nature and can cause symptoms such as blistering of the skin, gastrointestinal damage, and even organ failure.
To prevent such incidents from happening again, doctors strongly advise against consuming unfamiliar insects and recommend thorough inspection of fruits and vegetables to avoid contamination with moth worms. It is crucial for individuals to prioritize food safety and take precautions when it comes to consuming unknown items or ingredients.
In conclusion, while some may believe that consuming certain insects like ban mou worms can enhance health benefits, it is important to be cautious when it comes to food safety. Individuals should prioritize their health by avoiding unfamiliar or potentially harmful substances like those found in certain types of insects or fruits/vegetables.
