EDF Acquires General Electric’s Nuclear Activities: A Step Towards Securing France’s Nuclear Sector

EDF Officially Takes Over General Electric’s Nuclear Operations: Emmanuel Macron

In a major move towards securing France’s nuclear sector, EDF has officially taken over General Electric’s nuclear activities. President Emmanuel Macron announced the deal in an interview with the regional dailies of the EBRA group, emphasizing its importance as part of a “sovereignty approach” towards the nuclear industry. With this acquisition, EDF will now be responsible for the maintenance and manufacturing of Arabelle turbines, which are critical equipment for nuclear power plants.

This takeover was initially agreed upon in February 2022 and faced challenges such as concerns about Russian clients for this nuclear activity and potential opposition from the United States. However, Macron confirmed that these obstacles were successfully addressed. With this deal, EDF regains control over the production of turbines, which is essential to the sustainability of France’s nuclear power sector – a source of national pride.

Macron also reiterated his support for nuclear power and encouraged other European countries to invest in it. He emphasized the need for Europe to be sovereign, decarbonize, and win the industrial battle through a combination of energy efficiency, renewables, and nuclear power. The president intends to expand on his Belfort program and present a more ambitious strategy by the end of the year to further solidify France’s position in the nuclear sector.
