Electric Cars More Likely to Fail Inspection in Finland: Report

Increase in Rejections of Electric Cars During Inspection – Discover Common Faults in Your Own Vehicle

The rejection rate of inspected cars in Finland has increased slightly in 2023, with almost a quarter of the cars rejected. While the reasons for rejections varied, electric cars had a higher rate of rejection compared to other passenger cars. This increase can be attributed to the growing number of electric cars on the road, which presented unique challenges for inspection stations.

The larger weight of electric cars, which is due to the battery weighing about half a ton, was one such challenge. This made it more difficult to detect defects and faults during the inspection process. As a result, many electric cars were rejected or received repair requests due to problems with the support arms, which keep the tires in control. Toivanen explained that these arm problems were partly caused by the greater weight of electric cars.

It’s worth noting that some models of electric cars are still new and have not yet reached the age at which they need to be inspected. For example, statistics compiled by authorities do not yet show Tesla’s SUV Model Y because it has not yet reached its inspection age. However, even when looking at all types of cars combined, almost every tenth one was rejected or received a repair request due to front axle faults or light problems.

Toivanen reminded drivers that it’s important to check their lights before going for an inspection to avoid unnecessary repair calls. This is not only important for passing inspections but also for ensuring traffic safety and general vehicle maintenance.
