Being alone with one’s thoughts can be difficult for many people, as reported by doctors. The experience of isolation can impact each person differently, but it is crucial to channel that silence into positive and inspiring thinking. Danielle Henderson, a clinical psychologist at IU Health, discussed the benefits of silence on mental health during an interview on Daybreak. She emphasized the importance of taking time to sit in silence without any distractions at least once a day to see what thoughts arise.

Henderson acknowledged that for some, sitting alone with their thoughts can be very challenging. A study from 2014 revealed that many individuals would rather give themselves electric shocks than spend a few minutes in silence with their thoughts. Despite the difficulty, she encouraged people to disconnect from the noise around them and embrace their thoughts, both negative and positive, as they come.

When negative thoughts arise, Henderson advised using them as an opportunity for growth. By having a predetermined list of topics to consider or explore when negative thoughts linger, individuals can navigate through the experience and learn from it. Embracing silence and allowing oneself to engage with their thoughts can ultimately lead to improved mental health and personal growth.

In conclusion, being alone with one’s thoughts is not always easy but it is essential for mental health. By taking time to sit in silence without any distractions at least once a day and embracing our thoughts both positive and negative we can learn more about ourselves and improve our overall well-being.
