Empathy and Understanding: Simpson County Technical Center Students Receive Training on Age Sensitivity and Caring for Individuals with Autism and Dementia

Students at Simpson County Technical Center recently received training on Age Sensitivity, led by Kathy Van Cleave, the Director of Education & Outreach at the Mind Center at UMMC. The training included simulation activities that allowed students to experience sensory changes commonly associated with aging. Through these activities, students developed empathy and understanding for older adults and learned how to care for them effectively.

In addition to learning about caring for older adults, students also gained knowledge on offering support to individuals and families impacted by autism and dementia. This included understanding how to provide access to supportive services and resources like counseling, respite care, and adaptive technology. These experiences helped students to better understand the entire lifespan and the challenges faced by individuals at different stages of life.

The training was led by Brenda White, the Instructor for Health Science at Simpson County Technical Center.
