Empowering Native American Youth: Oklahoma City Indian Clinic’s Mission to Reclaim Heritage and Promote Healthy Lifestyles

Oklahoma City Indian Clinic is dedicated to promoting physical activity and cultural awareness among Native American youth. Through initiatives like TURTLE Camps, Kids in the Kitchen, Mixed Martial Arts camps, and Clinic Culture Nights, OKCIC aims to bridge the gap by nurturing cultural connections and encouraging healthy lifestyles.

During the American Indian Boarding School era, Native children were forcibly removed from their homes and placed in boarding schools by the U.S. government. This led to severe abuse, trauma, and the suppression of their languages and traditions. OKCIC is focused on healing this generational trauma by offering programs that teach today’s youth the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle while honoring their heritage.

Rochelle Plummer, OKCIC’s Health Promotion and Diabetes Prevention Manager, emphasized the power of reclaiming one’s history and identity. The clinic aims to empower kids to lead healthy lives that embrace their cultural identities. OKCIC hosts events year-round to provide Native youth with opportunities to connect with their culture and understand the significance of healthy living.

These initiatives are designed to empower the next generation to preserve their cultural heritage while building a brighter, healthier, and happier future. To learn more about the programs offered by OKCIC, visit www.okcic.com.
