In a bid to promote mental health and wellbeing among men, Offload Cumbria, a peer support group, has recently launched activity-led sessions. Founded in 2020 by Liam Edmondson, the group caters to men aged 18 and above who are struggling with mental health issues. Edmondson, who was diagnosed with complex PTSD and anxiety disorder, faced challenges in accessing appropriate support after leaving his job as an emergency medical technician and special constable.
The group initially started as a free talking group for men in Penrith and Carlisle but has since expanded to include activity sessions such as bowling and axe throwing. These activities have proven popular among participants and provide a positive distraction that fosters open conversations about mental health. Edmondson believes that engaging in activities can help improve overall wellbeing by increasing happiness, building connections, and creating a supportive community for men dealing with mental health challenges.
To continue funding group activities for the next two years and reach more men in need, Offload Cumbria is currently seeking to raise £2,000. The group’s founder emphasizes the importance of combining traditional talking support with engaging activities to provide a holistic approach to mental health care that addresses both emotional and physical wellbeing.
For Edmondson, activities are the way forward in supporting men’s mental health because they offer a unique opportunity for individuals to come together, connect, and engage in positive experiences. By incorporating activities into their support sessions, Offload Cumbria hopes to provide a safe space where men can share their struggles while also enjoying themselves and building meaningful relationships with others.
Offload Cumbria’s expansion of their services beyond just talking sessions shows that there is a growing demand for new approaches to mental health care. With their focus on providing a supportive community through engaging activities, Offload Cumbria is making an essential contribution towards promoting better mental health outcomes for all men across Cumbria.
