EPP Secures Landslide Victory in European Parliament Elections: Centrist Forces Maintain Majority Amid Populist Challenges

Traditional parties win big in the latest European election forecast

The European Parliament has released its seat forecast for the latest elections, and the results confirm that traditional parties have secured a landslide victory. Preliminary results are available for all EU countries except Ireland through the Parliament’s results service, which updated the situation in Europe at 10:45 Finnish time on Monday morning.

The European People’s Party (EPP) will remain the largest party in the European Parliament, with 184 seats, five more than in the previous term. Ursula von der Leyen, EPP’s top candidate, claimed victory and emphasized their role as an anchor of stability. She highlighted that centrist forces still hold a majority in the parliament, which is crucial for European stability.

The Social Democrats (S&D) group is expected to remain the second-largest in the parliament, with 139 seats, similar to their previous representation. The center-liberal Renew group is projected to be the third-largest group, with 79 representatives.

In coalition negotiations, EPP aims to initiate talks with S&D and Renew in upcoming days. ECR is projected to be the fourth-largest group with 73 seats. The Greens of the European Parliament / European Free Alliance would drop to fifth position, losing seats from 71 to 52. Identity and Democracy group and The Left would remain small groups in sixth and seventh positions respectively.

After elections, some representatives may remain non-aligned or join political groups in future.

Overall these results suggest that centrist forces continue to hold a dominant position in Europe’s political landscape despite challenges posed by populist movements across Europe.
