Escape the Bore-dome: UAF Science Potpourri Returns with Engaging Activities for Children

The highly anticipated UAF Science Potpourri event is returning to the University of Alaska Fairbanks after taking a break due to Covid-19. Taking place on April 13 from noon to 3 p.m. in the Reichardt Building, this event aims to spark interest in science among children through engaging and interactive activities.

Lea Gardine, the public information officer at the UAF College of Natural Science and Mathematics, stressed the importance of piquing children’s curiosity through hands-on experiences where they can witness scientific processes unfolding before their eyes. Attendees can look forward to participating in various activities such as making liquid nitrogen ice cream, witnessing explosions, and experiencing an infrasound demonstration. Gardine highlighted the educational aspect of these activities, where participants can not only witness exciting experiments but also gain an understanding of the science behind them.

The Reichardt Building will be bustling with activities on all three floors during the Science Potpourri event, with this year marking its return after a gap since 2019. The event typically draws a large crowd, showcasing the community’s interest in science education. With the ever-changing world, Gardine emphasized the importance of fostering curiosity and knowledge about science to address global challenges and make informed decisions for the future.

Originally started in the 1980s by the chemistry department, the UAF Science Potpourri remains organized by chemistry faculty while incorporating students and staff from various science-related departments at the university. This event serves as a platform for inspiring a passion for science among children, encouraging them to explore the fascinating world of scientific discovery.
