Germany’s Economy Minister, Robert Habeck, during his recent visit to China, expressed the EU’s willingness to discuss tariffs on Chinese exports. This statement was made after he met with Chinese officials in Beijing, marking the first visit by a senior European official since the EU imposed provisional duties on Chinese-made electric vehicles.
Habeck emphasized the importance of dialogue between the EU and China regarding tariff issues. He acknowledged the need for open markets but also highlighted the importance of a level playing field for fair competition. The provisional duties are scheduled to take effect by July 4, with a continued investigation until November 2, when definitive duties may be imposed for up to five years.
During his visit, Habeck also highlighted the opportunity for negotiations and discussions between the EU and China in the coming months. He conveyed that he believes in the importance of open markets but also emphasized the necessity of addressing subsidies in a fair and balanced manner.
