Germany’s Economy Minister Robert Habeck has emphasized that the European Union is open to discussions on tariffs on Chinese exports during his visit to China. He expressed this sentiment while he was in Shanghai, stating that there is time until November for a dialogue between the EU and China on tariff issues.
Habeck believes that the doors for these talks are open, and hopes that his message was heard by Chinese officials. This marks the first visit by a senior European official since the EU proposed heavy duties on Chinese electric vehicles due to concerns over subsidies.
During his speech in Shanghai, Habeck stressed the importance of open markets but also highlighted the need for a level playing field. The EU’s provisional duties are scheduled to take effect by July 4, with the investigation continuing until November 2. At that point, definitive duties could be imposed for a period of five years.
Habeck believes that negotiations, discussion, and dialogue between the EU and China during this phase are crucial for addressing the issues surrounding tariffs on Chinese exports and ensuring fair trade practices in the global market.
