Eucalyptus Leaf Juice Dangers: How a Man’s Ignorance Led to Near Death in Hospital

A man in his 50s was rushed to the emergency room after experiencing severe respiratory failure and red urine following the consumption of eucalyptus leaf juice. The patient had a history of constipation and decided to try eucalyptus leaf water, which he prepared himself using leaves he picked from the forest. However, after feeling tired and noticing red urine, he did not seek medical attention until his condition worsened, prompting his family to take him to the hospital.

Upon examination at Thai Nguyen Central Hospital, doctors diagnosed the patient with acute hemolysis and hemorrhagic shock due to rhododendron leaf poisoning. The prognosis was grim, with the possibility of death looming. However, the emergency team took immediate action by administering fluid infusion, blood transfusion, and intensive resuscitation according to protocol.

Eucalyptus leaves are known for their laxative, detoxifying, and antiseptic qualities. They are often used in traditional medicine to treat constipation and other ailments. However, they can be toxic when consumed in excess or improperly prepared. Symptoms of eucalyptus poisoning can include rapid heart rate, weakness, pale skin, indigestion, bloating, and red urine. Severe cases may result in acute hemolysis, anemia, liver and kidney failure, and even multiple organ failure leading to death.

It is strongly advised against self-medication with eucalyptus leaves or any other herbal remedies without proper knowledge or guidance from medical professionals. If you experience any symptoms of poisoning or have ingested any potentially harmful substance or plant material, it is crucial to seek medical attention immediately.
