FIFA World Cup Opener at Risk: Azteca Stadium’s Delays Threaten to Overtake Mexico’s First Match

The Azteca Stadium is set to host its third World Cup opener on June 11, 2026, as the Mexico national team plays their first game of the tournament. However, the stadium is undergoing renovations to meet FIFA standards, which may jeopardize the possibility of hosting the opening game. According to information from 365 Score Mexico, the stadium owned by the Televisa Group is behind schedule and has failed to meet FIFA’s requirements.

FIFA has indicated that the Azteca Stadium did not pass their tests for the 2026 World Cup. The stadium’s remodeling is delayed by six months according to the original plan. In contrast, the BBVA and Akron stadiums, home to Rayados and Chivas respectively, have met FIFA’s requirements and are on track for the World Cup.

Monterrey and Guadalajara are also set to host matches during the tournament. Monterrey will host four matches, including two group stage games and one in the Round of 16. Guadalajara will host four matches in the first round, with a crucial game for the national team scheduled for June 18.
