A hydrogen market is set to be established in Finland with the help of its national hydrogen transmission network. Gas grid, a gas transmission network company, has released a preliminary plan for Finland’s hydrogen backbone network aimed at creating an open hydrogen market by the early 2030s. The plans were based on a market survey conducted by Gasgrid in 2023.
The initial phase of the planned hydrogen transmission network will focus on the coastal area of Finland, where a significant number of wind power projects are located and a large portion of the country’s carbon dioxide emissions are generated in southern Finland. This first phase will lay the foundation for future expansion into eastern, central, and northern Finland where new renewable energy production sites could be established.
In the coming months, Gasgrid will begin mapping out concrete route alternatives for the hydrogen transmission network, gathering feedback from companies and project developers involved in the hydrogen economy. This collaborative approach will help support the further development and expansion of the network in various regions of Finland.
