Fire Breaks Out on Icon of the Seas, Cruise Ship Continues Itinerary Amidst Series of Tragic Events

Massive Icon of the Seas ship catches fire days after departing

A fire broke out on the largest cruise ship in the world, the Icon of the Seas, on Tuesday while it was docked in Costa Maya, Mexico. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a small blaze erupted in a crew area and was quickly extinguished. The ship’s backup power system prevented any deviation from its planned itinerary.

The Icon of the Seas is currently on a week-long Western Caribbean cruise that began in Miami, Florida on Saturday. Despite this minor incident, it is not the first notable event on the ship since its maiden voyage in January. In May, a passenger jumped off the ship while it was only 300 miles from its origin port in Florida. Passengers described a chaotic scene when they thought the man had been rescued from the water, only to learn that he had not survived. Additionally, another incident occurred earlier when a 20-year-old passenger fell to his death during a reportedly drunken fight with his father on a different Royal Caribbean cruise.

Royal Caribbean did not provide immediate comments regarding these incidents.
