Florida Expands Home Healthcare Access for Medicaid Patients: A Step Towards Improving Healthcare Equality

Florida’s new law leads to expansion of home health services

The state of Florida has recently taken steps to improve healthcare access for its residents, particularly those on Medicaid. Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill that will allow advanced practice registered nurses and physician assistants to order medically necessary home health care services for Medicaid patients. This new law brings Medicaid patients in line with federal and private insurers, making it easier for them to access healthcare services in the comfort of their own homes.

According to Representative Gallop Franklin from Tallahassee, Medicaid patients have historically faced challenges in accessing healthcare services. By expanding the ability of advanced practice registered nurses and physician assistants to order home services, the new law aims to address these challenges and improve access to care for Medicaid patients.

Starting on July 1, 2024, healthcare services offered in the home for Medicaid patients may include doctor care, nursing care, therapy services, home health aide services, medical social services, and homemaker/companion services. This expansion of services aims to reduce the need for unnecessary trips to the doctor’s office and improve access to care for Medicaid patients.

The new law is part of a broader effort by the state legislature to expand healthcare access in Florida. The Live Healthy Act provides funding for healthcare providers to invest in recruiting and telehealth technology, further improving access to care for residents across the state.
