From Critic to Supporter: Rory McIlroy’s Changing Stance on Saudi-Backed Golf League

Rory McIlroy Regrets Being So Invested in Tour-LIV Split

Rory McIlroy has admitted to feeling regret over his involvement in the Saudi-backed league known as LIV Golf, despite his previous stance against it. The golfer spoke out at Hamilton Golf & Country Club, stating that he wishes he hadn’t gotten as deeply involved in the situation. However, McIlroy has also expressed his support for a deal with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), citing the divide in men’s professional golf as a major concern.

In recent years, McIlroy had been critical of LIV Golf and the disruption it caused in men’s golf. However, following the framework agreement between PGA Tour and PIF, his stance shifted towards advocating for a deal with the fund. He emphasized that he regrets getting deeply involved in the matter but hopes that a resolution can be reached to bring together the sport.

McIlroy, a two-time Canadian Open champion, was appointed to lead negotiations on a daily basis as part of a transaction subcommittee tasked with reaching an agreement with PIF. On Wednesday, during his pro-am round at The Club at Weston Hills Country Club, tour commissioner Jay Monahan joined him, signaling ongoing talks towards an agreement with PIF.
