From Distemper to Glory: Wild Thang, the Ugliest Dog in America, Takes Home Top Prize

Wild Thang, an 8-year-old Pekingese from Oregon, has won the top prize at the annual World’s Ugliest Dog contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California. Known for his lolling tongue and unruly fur, Wild Thang finally won after finishing second in the contest three times before. His owner, Ann Lewis of North Bend, received a $5,000 check for the victory.

Wild Thang caught the judges’ attention with his endearing story despite contracting distemper as a puppy and his tongue sticking out. This was his fifth time competing in the contest, and the judges felt he deserved to win after being a favorite among fans. The contest aims to promote adopting dogs from shelters, particularly senior dogs, instead of buying from breeders.

The second-place prize went to a wheelchair-bound pug named Rome, while the bronze medal was awarded to a mixed breed rescue named Daisy May. The World’s Ugliest Dog contest has been a tradition at the fair for nearly 50 years, showcasing dogs of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds.

After Wild Thang’s win, media outlets tried to interview Lewis but were reportedly asked to give an exclusive first interview to NBC’s “Today” show in exchange for the prizes. Both Lewis and Wild Thang are expected to appear on the show on Monday morning and give viewers a glimpse into their heartwarming story and victory at the World’s Ugliest Dog contest.
