From Dive Shops to Boat Cleaning Services: How Water Quality is Impacting Businesses in Stuart, Fla.

Located in Stuart, Fla., boat cleaning services such as Barracuda Dive Service are facing a decline in business due to discharges from Lake Okeechobee. Owner Russell Singson stated that the murky water caused by the discharges has significantly reduced visibility underwater, making it challenging for divers to do their work efficiently. This has led to smaller paychecks and delays in completing boat cleanings, with many boats remaining in late status.

Due to concerns about water cleanliness, At the Helm Training located along the St. Lucie River has experienced a 50% decrease in bookings compared to the previous year. Operations Manager Nancy Husk emphasized that clients are avoiding water-related activities due to fears of water quality, recalling the severe algae bloom in 2018.

Both Singson and Husk are taking extra precautions with sanitation after diving, concerned about potential infections from contaminated water. They hope for a change in the Army Corps of Engineers’ approach to water releases from Lake Okeechobee, anticipating a plan to reduce discharges and improve water quality. The businesses in Stuart are hopeful that these changes will be implemented soon to mitigate negative impacts on the local economy and community.
