From Field Goal Flop to Lions Kicker: How Jake Bates’ Strong Leg and Long Kicks Will Save the Day

Lions ink UFL kicking star Jake Bates to 2-year deal

In a crucial NFC championship game last season, the Detroit Lions’ lack of confidence in their kicker proved costly, potentially costing the team a chance to win. To address their kicking issues for the upcoming season, the Lions have turned to Jake Bates, a standout in the UFL.

Recently, the Lions signed Michigan Panthers kicker Jake Bates to a two-year contract. Bates has caught the attention of many NFL teams with his impressive performance for the Panthers. Despite not being the most accurate kicker, converting 77% of his field goals for his former team, Bates has shown a strong leg and the ability to make long-distance kicks.

During his time with the Panthers, Bates notably hit 64- and 62-yard field goals, showcasing his ability to kick from long range. His performance has garnered attention in the NFL, with the Lions being the latest team to sign him. Previously, Bates had stints with the Houston Texans and Tampa Bay Buccaneers without finding a permanent home in the league.

In last season’s NFC championship game against the San Francisco 49ers, Dan Campbell’s decision not to go for it on fourth down proved pivotal as he was unsure about his kicker’s ability. The Lions ultimately fell short in a 34-31 defeat due to missed opportunities that cost them valuable points. Bates’ signing signals that Campbell now trusts him enough to secure a reliable kicker and address their kicking situation heading into this new season.

Despite not being very accurate, Bates’ strong leg and ability to make long kicks could be an asset for Lions if they utilize him correctly.

As roster spots are at premium for this team, they may choose to use him mainly for kickoffs and field goals over 50 yards instead of relying on him for shorter kicks where accuracy is more critical.

The signing of Jake Bates could prove significant as he brings experience and consistency that will help strengthen their offense going forward into next season.
